Hiya, my name is Viviene and I used to work with big, powerful lasers, and automation but now I focus on lasers for space (internet in space maybe?) and sometimes work on lasers that could be used for healthcare. I’m a small girl who likes plants and double cream Oreos. I spend time reading and watching science-related stuff and when I’m not, I’m usually spending time with family and friends.

I live in South Leeds, but I grew up south of Birmingham. I’ve been running a research group in Polymer chemistry for 7 years now, working with brilliant people to solve big problems. I’ve always liked writing and talking – I used to run a radio show at University (heavy metal music for the masses) and write my own science fiction stories (I have a letter from the BBC from around 2002 saying they didn’t need a 12 year old to write any Dr Who stories). Now I write scientific papers and talk about them at conferences.

I specialize in a branch of Theoretical Physics called Quantum Field Theory, which tries to describe how particles behave and interact with each other. I received my BS/MSc degree in manufacturing technology from the University of Miskolc in Hungary, MSc degree in mechanical engineering from Brown University in the USA, and PhD in mechanical engineering and material science from the University of Pittsburgh in the USA.
My past academic positions are teaching assistance and two post-doctorate contracts at the University of Pittsburgh, assistant professor at Vespreme University (Panonia), research fellow at Hungarian academy of sciences, and associate professor at Obudai University, successively.
