Hiya, my name is Viviene and I used to work with big, powerful lasers, and automation but now I focus on lasers for space (internet in space maybe?) and sometimes work on lasers that could be used for healthcare. I’m a small girl who likes plants and double cream Oreos. I spend time reading and watching science-related stuff and when I’m not, I’m usually spending time with family and friends.

I’m an astronomer / astrophysicist at the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium. Here, as a Research Fellow, I get to analyse data from some of the world’s best telescopes to try answer fascinating questions about the Universe. I also love travelling to new places and trying new foods!

I enjoy lots of different sports, especially Football and Rugby League.

My undergraduate degree was in Maths and Physics and I hold a PhD in Nuclear Structure Physics. I’m an academic at the University of Manchester currently working in proton beam therapy, researching and developing novel techniques and technologies to improve proton beam therapy for cancer care.

Actually, my current job is in Cumbria at the Dalton Cumbrian Facility, so I live there during the week and travel home at weekends. I’ve previously worked at Lancaster University, Manchester University, Daresbury Laboratory and CERN (the home of the Large Hadron Collider). I like yoga, wildlife and sci-fi/action films. I am also a scuba diving instructor.
