Sometimes, the ideas will come from previous experience, others will come from examples I’ve read about. For the bespoke designs, it can be down to trial and error. Looking at what the manufacturers guidelines are and seeing what the capabilities of the equipment actually are (just because it says it can do it on paper doesn’t always mean it translates well in real-life).
The main thing is to start with a simple idea and expand on it – iterative design. Take your idea, expand on it and then review to make sure you are not moving away from your initial goal.
Very gradually! It’s rare that a whole answer comes at once, but as you think about something more and more becomes clear (and you can put right the bits which were wrong initially).
