I am from Zimbabwe and have been in the UK over 20 years. In my free time I manage a blog about growing up and how weird and wonderful it is to be grown up. I got into chemistry because my teachers at school made the subject really interesting, when I was really struggling to figure out what to do. The great thing about a STEM subject is that there are a lot of places I can end up. So the options and variety available to me made Chemistry worthy of my attention.

Chemistry uses maths as well as the periodic table to make things make sense. Each day I am either writing reports, reading data or talking to people in the labs who worked with the chemicals, to make sure I have enough information to tell the company how to manage the materials. The stuff we handle is dangerous and needs to be handled carefully, so with my help, the people can actually handle the materials and get home safely each day.

My Typical Day:
I wake up and get ready for work. If I am in the office, I will walk to work and start around 7:30 am. I sit at my desk and meetings, until lunch time, where I go home to enjoy my hot lunch. I will go for a walk around the beach before I get back to my desk, listen to some music in my headphones whilst I work on my reports and finish work at 3:40 pm.

When I am not in the office, I make sure I get downstairs to my desk for 7:30. Sometimes I get to go work on the actual site, where the chemicals and materials are. There are different ways for my day to play out. When I am on the actual site, I buy a hot lunch from the dinner hall.
When I listen to music at work, I make sure its music with no words, so I can concentrate and focus on my work. People in my team do the same.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would donate it to STEM programs in my local area. For example there is a company just setting up, that provide a Formula 1 themed STEM event for schools, and it would be great fun for more students in my local area to be able to experience and access it. So, I am sure they would appreciate the donation to support that program.
-
Education:
I went to Primary School in Lancaster and then went to Dallam School from year 7 until 6th form.
