About Me:
I’m a chemical bioengineering PhD student at Imperial College London. I’ve helped organise and plan the LGBTQ+ Pride Month event for my department, and am also the course representative.

I try and keep my work during work hours as much as I can (not always possible!), so I can enjoy going climbing and to the gym with my friends, wandering around London and seeing my partner as much as I can. I regularly go to the theatre and often play video games to relax in the evening.

My Work:
My PhD work is trying to create a cell from scratch to make any possible protein we could want! My approach aims to cut down the time it takes to get proteins from cells from 1 week or sometimes more, to under 48 hours.

I use a polymer to make devices with a maze of channels that hold tiny volumes of liquid, and I store DNA throughout this like a nucleus in a cell. This means that using kits desgined to carry out each step of protein synthesis, we could produce whatever protein someone is interested in, as well as explore new proteins that are not found in nature.
The hope is we can use this in labs studying diseases to decrease the amount of time they have to spend working with cells, and increase the time spent studying the important proteins – every minute counts!

My Typical Day:
I normally get to the lab between 9-9:30, have a coffee and go over my plan for the day. With my work, the morning is often spent preparing solutions for an experiment and then in the afternoon I run the experiments for my system, and go over my data from the day before while this runs. I leave between 4:30-6:00, and go to the gym after work.

My work is split between chemical engineering, chemistry, and biology. I have to make and design my small devices, which normally includes some maths and modelling, carry out chemical reactions to make the devices work as they shoud, as well as growing cells and working with DNA and proteins.
Some days are spent solely in front of a computer either doing data analysis, preparing updates/presentations, or just finding new updates in my field,

Work History:
I worked as an assistant in a butchers between ages 14-16, before moving to work as a waiter in restaraunts alongside my studies from 16-20.
In the final year of my degree I did a year abroad, carrying out research sponsored by Harvard Medical School in the Laboratory for Drug Discovery in Neurodegeneration in Boston, MA.
When I came back from the states after graduating, I worked at a Michelin guide restaraunt as a barman, before moving to London to begin my PhD at Imperial College London.
