I have a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Leicester, and a Masters Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicinal Chemistry from Loughborough University. I would love to go into research, specifically to look into how we can use current medicines to treat different illnesses.
I have been trampolining since I was 12 and have recently become a qualified coach. It has been my favourite sport for a long time now, I look forward to bouncing every week and encouraging others to love the sport too!! I practice yoga multiple times a week which helps me unwind and relax after being at work all day. π§ββοΈ
I love all animals and cannot wait to get pets of my own. I grew up with pets and my family currently have a lurcher called Henry and a cat called Ivy. Previously we have also had rabbits. ππ°π

My Work:
I work in a laboratory with inhalers to make sure that the medicines we make are safe for patients to use.

I have worked in and around the lab for nearly 6 years. I started by learning how to perform specific tests on the inhalers to make sure they’re safe for use, for example ‘Content Assay’ which tests to make sure the right medicine is in the inhaler and in the right amount.
Then I started to learn the process of how the medicine is made, packaged, and shipped off to different countries to be used by patients all over the world.
Now I help with the reporting of data to customers – this means making sure that the reports that go to the customers have the right information on, such as the results of the tests, and that the reports show that the medicine is safe to use.
Alongside my work, I have the opportunity to work in the community by doing things such as painting schools and digging gardens so students can learn about science in nature, as well as charity events to raise money for charities local to me, e.g., Rainbows Hospice.
-
My Typical Day:
I wake up early and get to work with my partner for 7 am. I start each morning with a coffee, have a morning meeting with my team, work on the reports all day, have lunch with my partner and my friends – usually homemade lunch – then do more work and help my colleagues until about 3 pm when I leave to go home.

I work with a lot of different teams within my workplace and have to deal with questions that they have when using the system that makes the reports.
Teams enter the results of their tests into a system called STARLIMS, which I help to look after, and my team and I make sure that the system is working for everyone that needs to use it, and help to answer any questions and mend the system when there are any problems.
I have to visit people in all parts of the company, some of them working in the labs and others that work making the medicines, to ask and answer questions and get their help solving problems that we have as well.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would buy science equipment to make ready to use experiment kits that I could take into schools to demonstrate how fun science is, and it would also be available for other STEM ambassadors in my company to use for similar purposes.
-
Education:
All of my education was done in Leicestershire – I started at Glen Hills Primary School in Leicester from age 4-10, then attended South Wigston High School from age 10-14.
I did my GCSEs and A-Levels at Countesthorpe College ages 14-18 where I passed all of my exams. I passed 3 A-Levels and 2 AS-Levels.
I got in to the University of Leicester to study Pharmaceutical Chemistry where I passed, then did my Masters Degree at Loughborough University, passing in 2018.
I always knew I wanted a career in Science – it started by wanting to be a marine biologist, but when I was choosing my A-Levels, it was recommended that I take Chemistry as I’d already chosen Biology, French and Geography and Chemistry fit with those 3 well, and the rest is history as I pursued Chemistry the furthest, taking it to degree level.
-
Qualifications:
I have 11 GCSEs including a short course that I took in Year 9.
I have 3 A-Level and 2 AS-Level qualifications – Chemistry, French and Geography as full A-Levels, and Biology and Critical Thinking as AS-Levels.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours from the University of Leicester.
I have a Master’s Degree with Honours from Loughborough University.
Each level of education was helpful to get to the next level, so by getting good A-Level results, it allowed me to get into the University that I wanted to, and by getting good degree results, it allowed me to get into another good University to do my Master’s.
-
Work History:
My first job was a glass collector at a local Sports and Social Club, and when I turned 18 I learnt how to serve drinks from behind the bar.
Between A-Levels and University I took a gap year and worked at the company I’m at now for 11 months to earn some money and learn what it is like in industry before doing my degree.
I left this job and worked at Boots on the ‘shop floor’ and behind the tills during my years at University. I originally wanted to be trained in the Pharmacy department, but after learning a bit about the role I realised it wasn’t the direction I wanted my career to take.
After finishing my degrees, I went back to the company I work at now as a QC (Quality Control) analyst, working in the laboratory testing inhalers.
-
Current Job:
My official title is ‘LIMS Application Administrator’ which involves looking after the LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) to ensure that it works correctly and that everyone who needs to use it can do so properly.
-
Employer:
I work at Kindeva Drug Delivery – we used to be part of a company called 3M, but we split off to make our own new company. We have 2 sites in the UK and multiple sites across America. We make inhalers in the UK, such as Ventolin (usually a blue inhaler used by people with asthma), and the medicines we make are used by people all over the world.
