About Me:
I live with my partner in Swindon and work at the National Chemical Emergency Centre. Outside of work we are adjusting to life without our beautiful Akita, who we lost just before Christmas so I regularly attend the gym to replace the exercise!

I am registered disabled and have 5 lifelong medical conditions (the first of which appeared when I was 16). I manage these against working full time, which makes life interesting. I have never let this be a barrier to achieving what I really want though and as such have a fulfilling life, with a strong family and friend network and an interesting career. Since we lost our beautiful dog, we have made the most of our new found freedom by spending weekends away whenever possible – my partner works shifts so works many weekends, which me a chance to catch up on the housework and the soaps, which he is not into at all. When off together and chilling at home, we tend to binge watch box sets, taking it in turns to choose.

I manage the national chemical emergency line that is available to all emergency service personnel and other government approved agencies. We take approximately 300 calls a year on this line, which can be anything from a small scale spillage, to a drugs lab to a massive tanker rollover on a road. I have been at the centre for 19 years and have worked across both out national and commercial business during that time. I also train emergency services in what we can offer and technical chemical subjects.
-
My Typical Day:
There is no real typical day for me – I mostly work from home, starting at 08:00 and finishing at 16:30 (taking breaks during the day). I go to the office once a week. However, I am often travelling around the country delivering training or attending exhibitions and conferences.

No two days are the same in terms of my work. I can be writing or reviewing emergency response knowledge documents on subjects ranging from fertiliser fires to drugs labs. I can be reviewing calls for technical quality or training the emergency responders. I can be writing reports on our work for the government or I can be out and about promoting the working we do and delivering training to the emergency services and other approved users.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would ideally like to spend more time in schools, talking to the future generation of scientists, inspiring them on not only a different path to take with a chemistry degree but also on the fact that disability and health challenges are no barrier to achieving what you want in life.
-
Education:
I went to school at Penns Combined Primary School and Fairfax Secondary School. I got I had to split my A levels over three years for health reasons
I then went to Bristol University and did a BSc with a year in industry. Whilst I massively enjoyed this, it crystallised my thought process on where I wanted my career to go. I took an extra year for my degree course again for health reasons.
I then worked in retail for a short period, whilst my health stabilised.
I joined NCEC in 2006 as my first real career job and have been there ever since.

My Interview

What did you want to be after you left school?
I had various ideas, a vet but even though I loved it my work experience convinced me this was not the right path, a teacher but I changed my mind, a forensic scientist etc. However, the only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to be able to see the impact my work had on the real world!
Were you ever in trouble at school?
No, the only time I was reported for non-attendance, I was representing the school at a concert for the Duke of Edinburgh so lots of apologies to my parents there!
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
Probably forensic science as I find it fascinating.
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Probably Bon Jovi but I have wide, eclectic taste in music
What's your favourite food?
A chicken and halloumi burger that my partner invented for me
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
TO have my dog back would be number 1 but to be healthy would be a close second. Lastly, to have enough money to buy a bigger house outright.
Tell us a joke.
Why don't scientists trust atoms - because they make up everything.
